21GNU nano 2.8.3 "Hirsch" fixes a misplacement of the spotlight
22during interactive replacing, avoids build failures on AIX
23and Solaris, fixes a crash on Solaris, speeds up backwards
24searching, improves PHP syntax highlighting, and no longer
8f3b8915 25asks "save anyway?" when the user ^Q discards the buffer.

31GNU nano 2.8.2 "Krats" adds another new feature: it makes
32the ^G help texts searchable with ^W. Apart from that,
33it fixes a crash when resizing the window in the middle
34of verbatim input, avoids an unlikely crash when used
35without UTF-8 support in some locales, avoids redrawing
36the screen twice when switching between buffers while
37line numbers are active, and works around a coloring
38bug on musl. Plus tweaks to the documentation; plus
39translation updates for fifteen languages.

45GNU nano 2.8.1 "Ellert" fixes build failures on MacOS and
46on musl, fixes scrolling problems in softwrap mode when
47double-width characters on row boundaries are involved,
48shows double-width characters as ">" and "<" when split
49across two rows, moves the cursor more predictably (at
50the cost of sometimes putting it on the second "half"
51of a character), avoids creating lines that consist of
52only blanks when using autoindent, makes ^Home and ^End
53go to the start and end of the file (on terminals that
54support those keystrokes), places the cursor better when
55linting, lets the linter ask only once whether to open
56an included file, and adds bindings for ^Up and ^Down
57in the file browser. Don't sit on your hands.

63GNU nano 2.8.0 "Axat" makes it easier to move around in
64softwrapped lines: the Up and Down keys now step from
65visual row to visual row instead of jumping between
66logical lines, and the Home and End keys now move to
67the start and end of a row, and only when already
68there, then to the start and end of the logical line.
69Furthermore, the screen can now scroll per row instead
70of always per logical line. On an entirely different
71front: nano now makes use of gnulib, to make it build
72on more platforms. In short: there were many internal
73changes, not many user-visible ones (apart form the
74new softwrap navigation). The conversion to gnulib
75was done by Mike Frysinger, the softwrap overhaul by
76David Ramsey.

82GNU nano 2.7.5 "Nijntje" can properly search and replace
83the \B and \b regex anchors, correctly repaints things
84when multiline regexes with identical start and end are
85involved, fixes a crash with zero-length regex matches,
86does replacements at the edges of a marked region right,
87no longer hides double-width characters at the head of
88softwrapped rows, displays at most three warnings at
89startup, and documents the ability to read a file from
90standard input. Come tickle my ears.

96GNU nano 2.7.4 "Red dress" undoes deletions in an orderly
97manner again (bug was introduced in previous version),
98sets the preferred x position for vertical movements
99more consistently, avoids some scrolling problems in
100softwrap mode, installs the Info manual also when your
101system lacks 'makeinfo', and corrects the behavior of
102the beginning-of-word anchor (\<) in regex searches.

108GNU nano 2.7.3 "Ontbijtkoek" wipes away a handful of bugs:
109your editor is now able to handle filenames that contain
110newlines, avoids a brief flash of color when switching
111between buffers that are governed by different syntaxes,
112makes the Shift+Ctrl+Arrow keys select text again on a
113Linux console, is more resistant against malformations
114in the positionlog file, and does not crash when ^C is
115typed on systems where it produces the code KEY_CANCEL.
116Oh, and it no longer mistakenly warns about editing an
117unlocked file just after saving a new one. That's it.
118Tastes great with thick butter.

124GNU nano 2.7.2 "Shemesh! Shemesh!" brings another feature:
125the ability to complete with one keystroke (^] by default)
126a fragment of a word to a full word existing elsewhere in
127the current buffer. Besides, this release fixes two bugs
128related to using line numbers in softwrap mode, allows to
129use the PageUp and PageDown keys together with Shift on
130VTE-based terminals, stops the help lines from flickering
131during interactive replacing, makes a 'set fill' override
132an earlier 'set nowrap', properly restores the selected
133region after an external spell check, and improves a few
134other tidbits. If you should find any more bugs, please
135run 'man nano | grep bugs' and report them there.

141GNU nano 2.7.1 "Leuven" adds an often-asked-for feature: the
142ability to display line numbers beside the text. This can
143be activated with -l or --linenumbers on the command line,
144or with 'set linenumbers' in your nanorc, or toggled with
145M-#. The coloring of these numbers can be chosen via the
146option 'set numbercolor'. This release furthermore fixes
147some bugs with scrolling in softwrap mode, is more strict
148in the parsing of key rebindings, and marks a new buffer
149as modified when the output of a command (^R ^X) has been
150read into it. Come and check it out!

156GNU nano 2.7.0 "Suni" adds a new feature: allowing text to be
157selected by holding Shift together with the cursor keys.
158Besides that, nano now works also when run in very tiny
159terminals (down to one line, one column), and improves
160the handling of the prompt in cramped spaces. Not much,
161but it's time to get it out there.
162
163With this release we return to GNU. For just a little while
164we dreamt we were tigers. But we are back in the herd,
165back to a healthy diet of fresh green free grass.

171nano 2.6.3 "Marika" makes the Ctrl+Arrow keys work also on
172a Linux virtual console, takes as verbatim only the very
173first keystroke after M-V, removes any lock files that it
174holds when dying, doesn't abort when a word contains digits
175(when using the default speller), fixes a small sorting bug
176in the file browser, makes searching case-insensitively in
177a UTF-8 locale a little faster, and doesn't enter invalid
178bytes when holding down both Alt keys. Santé!

184nano 2.6.2 "Le vent nous portera" adds two new features: the
185keystrokes Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down for jumping between blocks
186of text, and the option 'wordchars' for specifying which
187characters (beside alphanumeric ones) should be considered
188word-forming. Further, it provides feedback during Unicode
189input (M-V followed by a six-digit hexadecimal number which
190must start with 0 or 10), avoids a crash when resizing the
191window during Verbatim input, doesn't drop a keystroke after
192having been suspended, and replaces the beginning-of-line
193anchor (^) just once per line. There are also several tiny
194improvements in screen rendering and key handling.
195Come get your hair tousled!

201nano 2.6.1 "Stampede" is chiefly a translation update, but also
202adds one little feature (the ability to use negative numbers
203with Go To Line: -1 meaning the first line from the bottom),
204includes syntax highlighting for Rust, and fixes three tiny
205bugs (but in such far corners of the editor that they aren't
206even worth mentioning).

212nano 2.6.0 "Rubicon" fixes more than fifty little bugs -- and
213some of them not so little. It improves moving about in
214the file browser, corrects failings of the internal spell
215checker, adds a new feature (comment/uncomment lines, with
216default binding M-3), makes some error messages clearer,
217shows more of a file when positionlog is used and the cursor
218is near the end, displays all error messages at startup if
219there are multiple ones, does not misinterpret keystrokes
220when typing very fast, is less eager to trim the filename
221on narrow terminals, speeds up case-insensitive searches,
222and allows to abort re-searches. Among bunches of other
223things. It is worth the trouble to upgrade.
224
225And, with this release, we take leave of the herd...
226Bye! And thanks for all the grass!
